What do you say when a shoulder to lean on is gone? When a forever love who made the darkest days seem a whole lot brighter is brutally, suddenly snatched? When one of life’s most powerful persons is no more?

Words fail us. Although we only imagine the pain, we pray for strength and courage for our beloved sister, proudly one of Nigeria’s strongest women, a constant inspiration whose selflessness and passion keeps on touching lives, foremost Women’s right activist, Dr. Okei-Odumakin who recently lost her husband, highly regarded activist, Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin.

He died at the intensive care unit of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) due to Covid-19 complications on Friday morning.

Mr. Odumakin one of Nigeria’s leading voice in activism, started his activism at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he served as the Public Relations Officer of the university’s Students’ Union.

Yinka Odumakin, will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 24, according to Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, who made the announcement, the rites will span three days, starting from Thursday, April 22, Friday 23 and Saturday, April, 24.

“There would be day of tributes and Service of Songs at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm while his body lies in state on Thursday, April, 22.

“On Friday 23, his body departs Lagos for Moro, his country home, in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun.

“There will be a Christian wake keep by 5:00 pm at the Origbo Anglican Grammar School, Moro, which will be followed by a Candle light procession,” she said.

Reflecting on the life and times with her as well as his long lasting impeccable legacy, Odumakin said:

“The life of Yinka cannot be described within the limited space available here and this will definitely be done in detail as the time becomes ripe. But I can only say he lived one of the most impactful lives anyone would have wished to live, going by his well-defined roles in the growth of humanity and his untiring commitment to nation-building in which he made his voice loud and clear at every chapter of its evolution. Yinka was a firm and resolute man while fighting for a cause. He knew how to demarcate spiritedly between what the masses desire and the interest of the few.”

Rest in Power ??
