Akeelah and the Bee Star Keke Palmer To Star In And Executive-Produce Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Alice’ Inspired By True Events

Talk show host and actress Keke Palmer is taking the lead in sci-fi thriller Alice inspired by true events. โ€œAliceโ€ is inspired by the true events of a woman of servitude in 1800s Georgia, who escapes the 55-acre confines of her captor to discover the shocking reality that exists beyond the tree line โ€” itโ€™s 1973.

Palmer, is also onboard as executive-producer, Krystin Ver Linden joins in as screenwriter and will make her directorial debut while John Wick and Spotlight’s Peter Lawson will be producing, Jose Agustin Valdes and Luisa Fernanda Espinosa of Steel Springs Pictures also exec producing. โ€œSo many films that depict this time in our history are rooted in victimization of the Black female lead. This story is the opposite and thatโ€™s what attracted me to Krystinโ€™s perspective,โ€ said Palmer. โ€œIt tackles the harsh realities of slavery and White supremacy while also offering inspiration and vindication through the story of Aliceโ€™s journey. I donโ€™t want anyone to leave the theater feeling debilitated, I want them to feel empowered,โ€ she continued.
Ver Linden said: โ€œBlack Power is giving power to people who have not had power to determine their destiny. Huey Newtonโ€™s resounding quote has been affixed on my corkboard for as long as I can remember picking up a pen to write.โ€ โ€œThose words echo every creative endeavor that Iโ€™ve undergone, so when I read about the true story of a woman who escaped the confines of a self-proclaimed plantation, becomes radicalized and seeks out her oppressorโ€ฆ It spoke to me on a very deep, undeniable level,โ€ said the screenwriter.

Ver Linden is happy to have Palmer portraying her muse. โ€œKeke is a force to be reckoned with. Her talent, truth, strength and depth are beyond words and measureโ€ฆ. A virtuoso of Kekeโ€™s caliber is a genuine dream to work with,โ€ she said.
