Vjosa Osamani-Sadriu: Kosovo's New President

No longer is the world being ruled by archaic ideologies, it’s a dynamic world and yes, women are now proudly given the chance to show great leadership, therefore blazing a path for a more balanced, unifying and equal world.

38 year old Vjosa Osamani-Sadrius emerged Kosovoโ€™s new president after a two day session of 120-seat parliament with 71 votes. She stands proudly as the countryโ€™s youngest head of state, its second female president and one of the youngest in the world.

Recall in November last year, Osmani took over as acting president of Kosovo following predecessor, Hashim Thaci’s resignation ahead of his standing trial for war crimes at the Hague. Thaci, an armed group leader alongside three other leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are being charged for their roles during Kosovoโ€™s war for independence from Serbia in the late 1990s, which include illegal detentions, torturing and killings.

Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, was elected to a five-year term on Sunday by Kosovoโ€™s Assembly, or Parliament. Although the post is largely ceremonial, she will be active voice in foreign policy and the commander of the armed forces.

Although largely lacking experience as argued by critics, Osamani, has earned reputation as โ€œfearless,” she was among the first to boldly speak out about the ruling corrupt elite โ€“ not easy given the respect they earned by their wartime roles.

โ€œOsmani has captured the hearts of many Kosovo citizens, as she is charismatic, confident and a 21st-century role model for women,โ€ one law journal described the president recently.

Jurist and Politician Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, the fifth President of Kosovo studied law in Pristina as well as in the United States in Pittsburgh.

Osmani who began her political career in her teens has grown to become one of the most respected voices in the political circle. She worked as an advisor to the president of Kosovo before she was elected to the Assembly. Osmani held the position of Speaker of the Assembly from February 2020 to March 2021, and also served as acting president between November 2020 and March 2021 after the resignation of President Hashim Thaรงi.

Dr. Osmani holds a Bachelorโ€™s degree from the University of Prishtina, and Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
