As we continue to celebrate the achievements of black and African men who are breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation, it’s only fitting that we shine the spotlight on Michael S. Regan, the first African American to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Born and raised in North Carolina, Regan’s passion for environmental justice and advocacy was fueled by his experiences growing up in communities that were disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution. This drive led him to pursue a degree in Environmental Science and Technology from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and later a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Regan has spent over two decades in environmental policy, working for various organizations and agencies, including the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the U.S. Forest Service. In these roles, he has been instrumental in developing and implementing programs and policies aimed at addressing environmental justice, climate change, and sustainable natural resources.
In March 2021, Regan was confirmed as the 16th Administrator of the EPA, becoming the first African American to lead the agency. In his new role, Regan is committed to using his platform to address the disproportionate impacts of pollution and climate change on communities of color and low-income communities, and to promote environmental justice and equity.
Despite the challenges he has faced in his career, Regan remains dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment and advocating for environmental justice. “We have a duty to protect this planet for future generations and ensure that everyone has access to clean air and water, no matter who they are or where they come from,” he says.
Regan’s inspiring journey and commitment to environmental justice make him a true trailblazer in his field, and a deserving #MCM. Through his work, he is not only making a difference in the lives of countless communities, but also setting an example for future generations to follow.
