Simidele Adeagbo is not just a name; she is a symbol of excellence, and pioneering spirit. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Nigerian parents, Adeagbo’s journey to becoming Africa’s first female skeleton athlete is as inspiring as it is remarkable.

Adeagbo’s early years were shaped by a blend of cultures and experiences. Moving to Ibadan, Nigeria, as an infant and later to the United States, she embraced diverse environments that would later enrich her perspective and fuel her ambitions.

Before her foray into skeleton racing, Adeagbo excelled in track and field, competing in the triple jump. Her athletic prowess earned her the title of a 4-time NCAA All-American and the triple jump record holder for the University of Kentucky. Despite narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Olympics in 2008, Adeagbo’s competitive spirit remained undeterred.

A pivotal moment came in December 2016 when Adeagbo heard about the Nigerian bobsled team’s quest to qualify for the Olympics. Intrigued by the challenge, she transitioned to skeleton racing, a decision that would redefine her athletic career.

In September 2017, Adeagbo embarked on her skeleton journey, sponsored by her employer, Nike, for whom she had served as a body double for tennis icon Serena Williams. Her dedication and determination soon paid off, culminating in her historic participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics as part of the Nigerian team.

Adeagbo’s achievements continued to soar, with a groundbreaking victory in the 2022 EuroCup’s women’s mono bob event in Germany, making her the first athlete from Africa to win an international sled race. Her success not only shattered barriers but also inspired a new generation of African athletes to dream big and aim high.

Off the track, Adeagbo is a marketing manager for Nike in South Africa, a role that allows her to blend her passion for sports with her professional expertise. She has also shared her inspiring journey on platforms such as TEDxLagos, where she captivated audiences with her story of resilience and determination.

Simidele Adeagbo’s story through her career has demonstrated the power of perseverance and the limitless potential of African athletes on the global stage. She continues to push boundaries and defy expectations, around the world, proving that with dedication and courage, anything is possible.
