Ruth Zaipuna: One of the Female CEOs in Tanzania

Ruth Zaipuna is currently the Chief Executive Officer of NMB bank plc, Tanzania’s most profitable lender responsible to drive the Bank’s corporate strategy to deliver sustainable business growth. She was appointed in August 2020.

She started her career in 2002 at Price water house Coopers (PwC). For a decade, she worked in the audit of banks and other financial institutions where she rose from scratch to the rank of Associate Director. Ruth demonstrated great professionalism and technical expertise in her job and she was entrusted to lead some of the most difficult assignments in the firm.

In August 2011, she left to take up the position of Executive Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Standard Chartered Bank. And in July 2017, she took on additional duties combining her role in Tanzania with that of Business Finance Lead for the East African cluster, overseeing and leading the Bank’s business finance activities in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

Ruth then joined NMB Bank from Standard Chartered Bank as Chief Financial Officer, towards the end of June 2018. And in November 2019, the NMB Board of Directors appointed her as the Acting Managing Director for NMB. She is also leading the Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA) Tax Group.

She is an Independent Non-Executive Director for Tanzania Portland Cement, Company Limited (TPCC), the leading cement producing company in Tanzania and listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange.

She holds a Master’s degree in business administration in Finance and a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce in Accounting both from the University of Dar es Salaam. She is also an Associate Certified Public Accountant (ACPA (T))
